Weavile, the Sharp Claw Pokémon. It signals its companions by using its claws to leave mysterious markings on the surfaces of trees and ice.
– Dawn’s Pokedex

Weavile is up today because I’m going to a con where I’ll be cosplaying as Weavile.

Weavile has become one of my favourite Pokemon. I first raised one because I needed a good Pokemon to go up against the Johto Elite 4. Her name is Blackie, Adamant-natured and EV’ed for Attack and Speed. She is fast and can hit hard, especially against Will’s Psychic team and Lance’s (mostly) Dragon team, with Night Slash and Ice Punch. I like its stat spread, having little Sp. Attack and lots of Attack and Speed. It makes it a glass cannon though, especially since Dark/Ice has many common weaknesses (it and its pre-evolution are the only ones with this type combination).

I raised another Weavile as Candice, for her rebattle team in Platinum. Her Weavile doesn’t have great moves though, only Faint Attack and Avalanche (which is a low priority move, and doesn’t take advantage of its Speed), Karen of the Elite 4’s Weavile has much better moves. It kinda sucks that Weavile only learns one ice move through level-up (Icy Wind, pretty much useless on a Physical attacker), and that Ice Punch has to be tutored.

Appearance-wise, it looks really unique. I like its sly grin in most of the art. The colours vary greatly depending on the sprite and art, so I had a bit of a challenge getting the colours to look nice.

  1. Hey there!

Weavile is quite one of my fav pokemon, even though Sneasel is better looking imo.

All my regrets that it can’t learn Ice Punch by itself too as you said.

    1. yeah, I don’t like how it doesn’t learn any good physical Ice moves by level-up (not that there’s many to choose from). Especially since there’s no move tutor in Black/White, you’d have to do some chain breeding to get Ice Punch…
