Grovyle, the Wood Gecko Pokémon. Grovyle is well known for its dexterity in the treetops, as it is often seen jumping from branch to branch. Even the fastest of Pokémon cannot catch a Grovyle in wooded areas.
– Ash’s Pokedex
Grovyle is the 2nd stage evolution of the Gen III Grass starter. It looks sleeker than Treecko.
In the anime, Ash’s Treecko evolved into Grovyle, which later evolved into Sceptile. Ash’s Grovyle liked acting cool, it always had a grass stem sticking out of the corner of its mouth.
Stat-wise, it’s fast, has good Sp Attack and decent Attack, but low Defenses in exchange. Strangely, even though Treecko learns Mega Drain (and Giga Drain in Gen V) by level-up, Grovyle does not. Grovyle is the first Pokemon to learn Leaf Blade though, a move that was signature of its family in Gen III when it was introduced. From Gen IV on though, other Pokemon can learn Leaf Blade as well, and it’s changed to be a physical move. I think this slightly put Grovyle at a slight disadvantage, because it has higher Sp Attack than Attack, so it doesn’t benefit from Leaf Blade as much as it did in Gen III, when Leaf Blade, like all Grass type attacks, were special.
