Grotle, the Grove Pokémon and the evolved form of Turtwig. Grotle lives near water in forests, and leaves the forest during the day to allow light to shine on the tree on its shell.
– Ash’s Pokedex
Grotle is the middle child of Gen IV’s Grass starter. It evolves the earliest of the Gen IV starters, at level 32 instead of 36 like the others. The sprout on Turtwig’s head somehow grew into two small trees on its back when it evolved, which will somehow combine into one big tree when it evolves again into Torterra. Its shell reminds me of a hardhat that it’s wearing, and not part of its body as a shell.
For some reason I keep on thinking that Grotle is Grass/Ground, but it doesn’t get the Ground subtype until it evolves. And probably because it’s not yet Ground type yet, it can’t learn Earthquake until it evolves.
Stat-wise, it has good Attack and Defense, and low Speed (’cause it’s based on a turtle). Unfortunately the highest base powered physical Grass attack Grotle can learn is Razor Leaf (it doesn’t get Leaf Blade), the other higher powered Grass moves are all special. It can learn Wood Hammer after it evolves (it needs a Heart Scale to relearn it though).
